Description of the painting by Pavel Kuznetsov “In the steppe at work. Shearing"

The artist was one of the innovators in art. His work reached its highest peak in the 10s of the twentieth century, when the steppe and Bukhara series exemplary in their impeccability appeared, to which the painting “At Work” belongs. The best canvases of the “Kyrgyz Suite” are distinguished by true grandeur, picturesqueness, a thorough understanding of the spirit of the East and its slow power-law dimension. This way they reach the philosophical level.

In the foreground, the painter depicted Kyrgyz women engaged in daily routine work - shearing sheep. They are motionless, as if petrified, and majestic, like the ancient steppe goddesses, harmonious with boundless earth and boundless sky. The artist’s writing technique is canonical; he follows a kind of constant rule. In the way the picture is built, the image on it is constructed, how human types are interpreted, echoes of ancient Russian traditions are visible.

The hand of a subtle colorist is felt in the picture, adoring combinations of quivering shades, halftones. At the same time, the picture is like a fresco: it is demonstratively planar, as if conceived to be connected with architecture. The true style of Kuznetsov is noticeable in it - the community of innermost lyricism and solidity, epicism. The artist creates a world of direct people, real life.

He praises the way of life of the Kirghiz, their extremely expressive, colorful and plastic costumes, despite all the brightness of the color. He glorifies the cleanliness and transparency of the air with his haze, the majestic steppe ships - camels, herds of horses, from which they receive koumiss, flocks of sheep, which are housewives engaged in grooming, patterned koshar carpets, naive, trusting, welcoming people who are engaged in subsistence farming. All this gave him many new impressions and material for reflection and reflection.

Kuznetsov in his picture plays with space through decorativeness. The blueness of the background emphasizes the twilight time, the reflections in tone on the nightmares resemble the period of the “Blue Rose”.
