Description of the painting by Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov “Lady in Blue”

Victor Borisov-Musatov's painting “Date in Blue” (“Woman in Blue”) was created in 1902, made in mixed media - pastel and watercolor.

Genre - portrait.

Style is post-impressionism.

In another way, like a lunar portrait, this picture cannot be called. Blue and blue shades in combination with light tones fill the picture with sophistication, cold mystery and mystery. In the center of the picture is the figure of a woman. Her eyes are half-closed, her head is lowered, dark ringlets with blue light reflected on them fall down on her shoulders, her hands are limply lowered. Aristocracy emphasizes an old dress with wide sleeves trimmed with lace. On the chest - a brooch of blue stone on a snow-white necklace.

Throughout the image of the lady - sadness, loneliness, some apathy, indifference, fatigue. In the form through the memory of lost happiness and hope. There is no hint of struggle and the desire to achieve something. Dreams of a new meeting, belief in the best fades away with the moonlight. Powerlessness is emphasized by a gentle, as if carved from stone profile, limp chin bearded, tired posture.

Refinement shows through in every detail of the picture: the lady’s face, her figure, lace on clothes that resonate with the lace pattern of leaves.

The whole picture is permeated with blue and blue, symbolizing mysticism, mystery, purity and nobility. Emptiness, serenity, silence and chastity are emphasized by white color. There are very few dark shades - only the hair and shadows on the dress. There are no bright, vivid colors at all. It seems that the face should have a soft light red or pink tint. But no - lips and cheeks are as if molded from wax.

The lyricism and poetry of the work touches the heart of the viewer, casting melancholy and sadness.

The work is stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery.
