Description of the painting by Igor Grabar "Birch Alley"

The painting "Birch Alley" is dedicated to the beauty of the native land and belongs to the late work of Igor Grabar. But, despite the difficult times that coincided with the painting, it is filled with soulfulness and awe in front of the power of nature.

The picture was created under the influence of impressionism. Igor Grabar, like his French predecessors, refuses contours, replacing them with a delicate blend of flowers on top of each other. The birch alley is painted in translucent tones. One shade smoothly transforms into another. But still, the manner of writing tells us that the creator of the picture is a Russian person. The plot underlying it is so close to any resident of Russia due to its simplicity and vitality.

Igor Grabar invites us to take a walk along the March birch alley with him. Thanks to the detailed drawing of details, we feel like participants in events. Take a step and you will feel a crunch of thawed snow under your feet. Its bluish tones fade into the blue of heaven. Against their background, white trunks of birches are brightly outlined.

We do not see the sun in the picture, but we clearly feel its light. It seems that the sun is directly above us and you can feel its warm rays on yourself. Transparency of tones, harmonious shades and soft contrast of trees tell us episodes from a long childhood in the village of my grandmother, when the soul is looking forward to the cold weather and rejoices at the first thaw. The air is still frosty, but the sun's warmth and bird's hubbub portend the imminent onset of the long-awaited spring.

The play of light and shadow and the prospect of birches lining up on both sides involve in a mysterious journey somewhere far from our everyday worries and trifling affairs. I would like to go down to the spring path and go along the rut left by the sled where my eyes look, over the horizon ...
