Vasiliev was an artist who impressed everyone with the realism of his paintings. So here, even with a detailed and rather close examination of the picture, the feeling that you have a photograph or at least a computer graphic image does not leave you. But no, this is really a picture.
Before us is a famous woman, Princess Eupraxia of Ryazan. Her husband was a famous prince who did not cherish a soul in his family: a beautiful young wife and a young son.
According to old Russian chronicles, the princess was famous for such incredible beauty that they spoke about her far beyond the borders of the country, although these territories were considerable. It so happened that the Tatar-Mongols fell on Russian lands. They exterminated men, captured children and beautiful young girls. Khan Batuy decided that such a beauty as Eupraxia must necessarily be his toy, otherwise it cannot be. He demanded that the prince, Fyodor Yuryevich, bring him his wife himself. But the prince refused, he could not dishonor his honor.
The princess could not stand it, and realizing that her fate had already been predetermined a long time ago, the hour with her young son jumped out of the princely tower.
In the picture we see just the moment of the jump, when Eupraxia and her son fly towards their death. But it is worth noting that she is not afraid to die, on the contrary, she boldly challenges and looks into her eyes. The princess's gaze is decisive and severe. She is the real wife of a warrior who will not give offense to her child. We see how frightened the boy is, he is closely pressed against his mother’s chest, realizing that their death is near. Eupraxia acted fearlessly, this is a real feat. So she was able to remain faithful to her homeland and not fall into the clutches of the enemy. Despite the fact that suicide in the church is considered a terrible sin, Eupraxia is canonized for her courageous act.
