Description of the painting by Mikhail Nesterov "Works of St. Sergius"

Iconographic images of Sergius of Radonezh are known to all, but his blessed life path was depicted not only on icons. Artists were inspired by the spiritual world of the saint. In particular, one of the most famous Russian painters who worked fruitfully both in the 19th and 20th centuries, Mikhail Nesterov, painted a large number of images of church saints. However, the image of the Life of St. Sergius had a special relationship for him.

At the very end of the 19th century, Mikhail Nesterov created the monumental triptych of the Works of St. Sergius, describing the period of the life of the Saint with the brethren. Masterfully combining images of saints and magnificent landscapes, the artist on each part of the picture depicts different seasons.

In one picture, the Saint in casual everyday clothes is shown bearing a rocker with two buckets, one of them has a carved cross. Here Nesterov showed autumn nature - drying red meadows, fields. The central picture shows the sawing of logs. Sergius with his comrade, another monk, are dressed only in cassock. The image of the saint represents the diligence, shows humility and zeal in the construction of the monastery. Hot summer dominates in the background, powerful spruce trees and slender birches stand. The picture on the right shows the street of the monastery, covered with snow. Sergius, dressed in a black robe, stands thoughtfully on a narrow snowy path. The artist emphasizes the sad face of the Saint against the backdrop of the splendor of the Russian winter, the brilliant robes of wooden huts, a church with a bell tower and tall fir trees.
