Description of the painting by Alexei Stepanov “Wolves”

"Wolves" - the work of Alexei Stepanov, written in the first decade of the 20th century, is stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery.

Stepanov, a very gentle and kind man who was popular with many friends, was best described by his student P. Korin. He compared Stepanov’s painting with Pushkin’s poems, noted as the main quality - the soul, combined with the highest skill, and at the same time sparkling simplicity.

Very early left an orphan, Alexey Stepanov initially received the profession of a surveyor. However, then he was so fascinated by the painting that he enrolled and successfully graduated from the Moscow School of Painting and Painting. The love of animals and nature at the institute was instilled in him by Leonid Sabaneev, editor of the journal "Nature and Hunting".

Then Stepanov worked a lot with Isaac Levitan - they laid the foundation for the so-called mood motive in landscape work. Artists complemented, transferred to the canvas their thoughts, emotions, experiences, thus the landscapes of both Levitan and Stepanova are deeply psychological, reveal the inner state of the authors.

Alexey Stepanov was very fond of painting pictures of rural nature, the theme of the road and movement is especially significant for him. Wide strokes, but at the same time a limited set of colors. A large number of paintings depicting animals, Stepanov reveal the psychological motives, habits of animals.

Many experts consider the artist as the second most important animal artist of Russia, after Serov. It was the theme of animals that became the basis for the teaching work of Stepanov in his native university.
