Description of Caravaggio's painting “David and Goliath (1601)”

This painting was commissioned by the artist Cardinal Scipione Borghese. David and Goliath, relying on biblical information, were the heroes of antiquity. David was to become king of the Jews, and Goliath was a giant - a Philistine. One of the biblical legends tells about the confrontation between these two characters. Gath's hometown was Gath, and he himself came from a Rephaimian tribe of giants. During the reign of Saul, this giant terrified the army of the Israelis., Fighting on the side of the Philistines and distinguished by incredible strength and cruelty.

David was a young shepherd who became one of the soldiers of the king of Israel. He heard about Goliath, whom even the most brave soldiers feared. But showing incredible courage and valor, the future king called the giant to a duel, which ended in his favor. He hit him with a stone embedded in a sling. According to ancient information, the growth of Goliath was more than three meters. Many writers mentioned giants who had just such a growth. The armament of the Philistine, who was shackled in scaly metal armor and wore a heavy copper helmet, is described in detail. His sword weighed about ten kilograms.

This type of painting is religious, and exactly repeats one of the biblical legends. Caravaggio's painting is characterized by a sharp contrast of shadows and light, which he carefully worked on canvas. The images of his characters are idealized, and the plot of the paintings is full of allegories. The work of the painter gives a sense of volume, creates emotional stress and emphasizes the simplicity of the characters. The picture seems incredibly soft and mobile, characterized by drama, reflecting the life of the artist himself. His canvases are plastic and contrasting, causing a strong affectation of the senses.
