Victor Borisov-Musatov came to art at the turn of the century, during the difficult period and filled with creative discoveries and personalities. And along with a bright and talented environment, the future artist and one of the most significant masters of symbolism in Russian art creates his own unique original style.
The works of Victor Elpidiforovich amazingly subtly combined natural ephemerality with the sensitivity of the poet’s soul, giving rise to soft tender images-mirages and nostalgic dreams. The leading motive of the paintings is the feeling of mystery and exciting expectation. The interiors of old estates, parks and gardens and, mainly, female images appear as a reflection of this “world”. The artist loved and exalted women, recreating them with wonderful idealistic visions.
Dreams and dreams in which Boris-Musatov lived and created appear in a series of lyrical paintings. One of them - “Motive without words”, created in 1900, is closest to the mood of the Silver Age. The picture is an illustration of sad lines about a sad love that has passed away. The airiness and softness of colors perfectly recreate the atmosphere of sadness and thoughtfulness. It is difficult to imagine what is presented to the eyes of the audience - a moment of quarrel or an intimate awkward moment of date.
The girl turns away from her gentleman, as if turning away and discarding his hopes of reciprocity. The companion’s face is indistinguishable, the main thing is in his pose - the body bent over the paper froze in tension, his hands cover the letter - perhaps the last chance for an explanation with his beloved. This nuance reflects humility with loss. After all, the girl is close, at a distance of the hand, but the man does not dare to speak, thereby involuntarily turning away from her.
The entire work is done in soft matte colors, without any bright accents and shadows. The image is faded, like the memories of the heroes about the past days of mutual feelings. The couple froze in exquisite images, immersed in foggy visions of their former hopes.
