Description of the painting by Mikhail Larionov "Resting Soldier"

Mikhail Fedorovich Larionov found that period of Russian art when it was necessary to find new artistic techniques. However, the master considered it wrong to completely abandon the aesthetics and principles of predecessors in the quest for new things. Larionov himself was close to futuristic artists who were looking for inspiration in folk art and the original traditions of fine art. In the pictures of the creator, a fascination with impressionism, the ideas of the French direction of "Fauvism" was noted.

The paintings of Mikhail Fedorovich depict everyday scenes of provincial and soldier life. Due to the fact that the painter repeatedly served camp camps, he studied with interest and enthusiasm the drawings and inscriptions of soldiers on the walls of the barracks. After they find their place in a specially created Larionov’s soldier series of paintings, many of them will become classics of Russian art. One of the most famous and central paintings of this series was the "Resting Soldier", created in 1911, and today occupying an honorable place in the State Tretyakov Gallery.

The work is written in the spirit of “naive” art - a simplified composition, intentional distortion of proportions, the predominance of rich, vibrant colors. The picture is a challenge and a desire to demonstrate a new perception of the surrounding reality. And even though many accused Larionov of cynicism and vulgarity, he became a true and authentic artist of life and its animal basis. The master denies the academic canons that do not reflect the forms and plots customary for the eye, which is why viewers and art have moved away from each other.

The whole appearance of a soldier is filled with irony. Larionov compares it to the "resting Venus." The unnaturalness and fracture of the posture is a mocking reference to compositions with reclining nudity. By the way, the image of "Venus" is also visible among the wall paintings. Expressive colorful strokes are contrasted with the generally accepted exquisite color palette. But all together - the lack of a plot and hard color schemes - give rise to harmony and amazing vibrancy and rhythm of the whole composition. The approved negligence of execution brings the image closer to folk forms of painting and the everyday genre.
