Konstantin Andreevich Somov is an unusual artist. He personifies Russian modernism and symbolism. In addition to being a painter, Somov created graphic works and illustrations for books such as, for example, Picnic.
The artist’s creativity is noted for harmonious, spiritualized, conveying the mood and mystery of the images of the world and nature. He painted unique paintings: elegant, full, plot and unusually beautiful. In addition to the original form, Somov put meaning, atmosphere, and soulfulness into the work. The author, rather, optimizes the moments, conveys their beauty, even hyperbolizes somewhere, however, if you look closely, it is very difficult to find naturalness in them - this is another feature of Somov. Perhaps this author wants to say that everything that happens is a game.
The Book of Marquises is a collection illustrated with graphic sketches by Somov of erotic content. Only eight sketches were allowed, including Picnic.
Somov painted a pretty girl in a lush pink dress with a small dog dressed in a dark orange costume.
In the background are people having fun and relaxing in nature: they are all beautifully dressed up and look very distinguished. Actions take place in the warm season, most likely in late summer or early fall: outfits of young people and beautiful ladies allow us to judge this. In addition, the foliage of trees growing in the area where the feast takes place becomes yellow and crumbles from the branches.
Sketches of Somov immediately attracted by the style of their performance. It catches the mood, interesting composition composition, colors, shades, appearance of the characters. Graphic and oil paintings of the artist make you peer, examining even the smallest details.
