Description of the painting by Viktor Vasnetsov “Wars of the Apocalypse”

Viktor Vasnetsov painted on canvas in 1887. It depicts four horsemen from the sixth chapter of the Revelations of St. John the Evangelist, these are biblical characters representing disasters in anticipation of the end of the world, the Last Judgment.

Vasnetsov portrayed horses appearing one after another. In the foreground appeared a rider on a white horse, destroying everything around him. He demolishes cities, the artist showed falling stone columns around which people lay in terrifying poses. Who is not there: the kings, with a crown on their heads, and the elders, and the warriors preparing the bow for the shot, and commoners. They are united by one thing: a terrible grimace of torment on the face, hopelessness, doom, fear. These riders appear as if from heaven.

The rider on a white horse has a bow, a crown is headed on his head, as a symbol of power and victory. The white color is the personification of evil, the rider has a terrible grimace, he came here to defeat humanity, he goes right over the heads.

A rider following him appeared on a red horse. He personifies the war. Vasnetsov portrayed him with a powerful muscular body, with a sword carried over the heads of the unfortunate. The rider's hair merges in color with the color of the horse. The horseman, sitting on a red horse, is dressed only in a bandage on his hip, earlier the gladiators spoke like that. The fiery color of the hair, the color of the horse and the sword, carried above the heads, represent spilled blood.

The third horseman, walking on a black horse, represents hunger; he is shown ashen - gray in color, with scales in his hands. The figure of this horseman is exhausted, his face is lifeless, like fitted bones. Libra is a symbol of deceitful justice.

The last rider named death, the pale horse. The horseman sitting on it has a skull and a scythe in his hand instead of his head; he is of some unnatural pale green color. Acts as a symbol of hell.
